Task Force: 6-12 Disciplinary Literacy

Our Beliefs:

  • Effective communication is crucial across academic disciplines, fostering learning. Middle and high school play a pivotal role in shaping positive attitudes toward discipline-specific communication among students. Every student is capable of engaging in disciplinary literacy practices.
  • Ensuring fair access to ambitious disciplinary literacy instruction is the baseline standard for Michigan's students. Instruction should be inclusive of students' diverse backgrounds, current contexts, talents, and interests, regardless of location or school.
  • Disciplinary literacy is empowering, extending beyond secondary education. Well-versed community members actively contribute to and enhance democratic societies.
  • Teaching disciplinary practices, language, and tools requires deliberate, coherent efforts. Educators, regardless of their subject, can enhance their disciplinary literacy instructional practices through high-quality professional learning in a supportive, growth-oriented system.
